Jetty + JGroups = HTTP Clustering

Three weeks ago I learned that you can integrate software as long as it is open source and as long as you are able to use its API. One of our technical manager - sir Migs Paraz asked us (we are two in the team) to integrate Jetty server with JGroups. The idea there was every time there is a request in the server, jgroups must be able to inform the nodes in the network that there is a request.

The clustering and node discovery is being done by JGroups while the handling of request of course is handled by the jetty handler. Actually, sir Migs asked us to do the idea to both jetty with jgroups and jetty with jboss cache. We were able to make it with JGroups and it took us more than a week with it. I’ll share the code next time.

We participated the very first Philippine Inter-Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) 2007. It was held last October 20, 2007 with De La Salle University-Canlubang as the host school. It was organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines headed by Dr. Raffy Saldaña.

With 4 teams with a total of 12 students representing our school, these 4 FEU - East Asia College team were able to solve at least one (1) problem out of six (6) in 3 hours. Though we did not make it to the top 10, it was an achievement still. Being a participant in this national contest with a total number of 51 competing teams was already a huge privilege.

So I salute to the FEU - East Asia College EAGER i-Tam Team! FYI, To sum it all, the whole team did make it to the Top 5! ^_^

Goodbye IBS

I’m home…

Me and my co-interns decided to go home early because of the typhoon Egay. I was with diane and KC when I left the office. Its actually my last day there… So I made farewell to Sir Ryan, Ms. Cecille, Sir Jules, Sir Jeff and Ms. Daisy. My supervisor, Ms. Van was absent because they said that she’s sick. Too bad, I didn’t have the chance to say goodbye to Ms. Van. I felt so sad… I wish she’s fine.

When we were going home, I was able to make chat with KC, one of my co-intern at IBS. She is so “makulit”… I never expected her to be like that because I wasn’t able to talk to her before. It only began today. TODAY. Well, as few people know, I have lack of self-initiative in approaching others. I am very shy. If not because of Diane, maybe, I left IBM not having the chance to make friends with KC. Thanks for that! I was able to have atleast one new friend before leaving…

My resignation is for real… but it’s not really goodbye after all. I’ll just leave the company but all of them will remain in me. I’m going to miss them all… my PC (you can use it now Keicie), the pantry, my desk, the building, elevator, everything…

IBM, at my last day…

Today is my last day at work. ~_~

I only have 3 more hours today to complete my 520-hour requirement for my first internship. So this is my last day here at IBM Business Services. I got a new company for my second internship and I will start there on Tuesday. Another 520 hours of work… I need a break!

My next internship will be at Novare Technologies located in Makati. I applied there 2 weeks ago and I got the internship position last week. So it’s sure… I am leaving this company… But in a way, I felt guilty. -_- it’s like, there is an idea that I didn’t enjoy working here that’s why I will leave. But that’s not like that… one of my short-term goals is to be flexible in all kinds of work. And so I am done in here, I want to have a new environment, a new kind of work, a new challenge…

Philippine National IT Standards Seminar

I attended a seminar yesterday morning about the Philippine National IT Standards or PhilNITs (formerly known as JITSE). It offers a Fundamental Exam (just like a certification exam) which will provide better career opportunity for the IT Professionals/Engineers here in the Philippines and abroad.

Our speaker during the seminar was the President of Innovus Computer Solutions - Mr. Rodrigo Basa. The seminar started with an introduction about the Technology in Japan which is now moving from E-Japan (Electronic-Japan) towards U-Japan. U-Japan means Ubiquotus-Japan wherein ubiquotus explains that all things are connected in a network.

Going down to the main topic, PhilNITS Foundation is implementing a Certification Program on the Fundamentals of IT (FE), adopted from the Japan Information Technology Engineers Examination Center (JITEC) an office under the Information Technology Promotion Agency, Japan.

I became interested to the PhilNITs exam and I am planning to take it on October. But first, I must prepare for it of course. The exam will cover different kinds of IT related subjects such as Programming (Java, C, COBOL, C++, Assembly), Project Management, Embedded Systems, IT Concepts and Theories, Algebra, Computer Architecture and a whole lot more.

I downloaded the past exams given at http://www.philnits.org/ and I can undeniably say that all the questions were really complicated. Anyway, I was not the only one interested to this exam. Many of my friends, classmates and schoolmates were interested too. So I will not be the only one that will possibly fail…(hahah!!) But of course, we’re still looking forward to it…

See you soon Japan!

Student Conference 2007: “Building the Culture of Research”

The Student Conference 2007: “Building the Culture of Research” was hosted and organized by the Web.IT Organization. It was an activity during the college week of FEU - East Asia College.

The presenters during the conference were groups of students from CS and IT department who were included in the best projects during their Application Project 2 for CS students or Web Project for IT students. There were 6 six groups who presented in the conference wherein 3 of them were from the Computer Science department and the other 3 were from the Information Technology department. These are the ExPro, Web Monsters, D’ Company, Cubic-L, the Triad and Team i-DUTY group.

Our group - Web Monsters was one of the presenters during the event. We presented our system which is the Integrated Library System from its overview up to the system demonstration. Other groups also presented their system. And there were many attendees in the conference which includes student from CS and IT department, 2nd year to 4th year, and even students from the FEU Main.

The conference was ended with a closing remark given by Dr. May Rose Imperial - the Assistant to the Director for Academics.

The conference was very neat and organized. I can say that it was successful though there were still things needed to be improved. Hence, it was a great achievement for the Web.IT Organization.
